Dr. Bubo, The Mézga Family, Vízipók, Pityke, Kukori and other fairy tale characters are moving to the internet, and their adventures are broadcast on Mese.tv. Favourites of young parents and their children have been posted on the world wide web as a result of the strategic cooperation of the most popular family portal, the Egyszervolt.hu group, and MTV Online¸market leading site family among television web sites.

Public television has been planning for a long time to expand its online portfolio, which is primarily based on news broadcasts and internet television, with cherished treasures from its half-a-century archive—more specifically, contents aimed expressly for children. Egyszervolt.hu site group was looking for programs with the aim of establishing and preserving treasures for the development of Mese.tv, its children’s internet television launched at Christmas 2004, and which is one-of-a-kind up to this day.

The two service providers, who represent the same philosophy, chose cooperation, so an ever-increasing selection of classic Hungarian programs, children’s and youth-oriented pieces, cartoons and puppet show series, as well feature films are broadcast to preschoolers and lower schoolers.

“We are continuously making the visiting audience of MTV Online younger, since, after the HíradóWeb which is aimed for the younger news audience, we can address a newer generation: the youngest of them receive MTV content now,” says Mucsi Csaba, new media chief editor. Then he adds, “We won’t stop: in our next development we are turning to families with a thematic family-lifestyle-eco portal; in which anchors of public television will contribute in the editing.”

The MTV Online site family, which operates as the third channel of public television, will be developed step-by-step by Hungarian Television. Gazdaság page, new since Híradó.hu, meets the interests, which have been growing ever since the financial crises broke out, with publicly understandable analyses and content organized in columns under “Loans,” “Insurance and Investment,” “Real Estate and Mortgage,” “Stocks and Bonds.” Hangadó tévé deals with news, critiques, recommendations and portraits related to popular music, in addition to video clips and concert recordings, and is aimed for young users.

Egyszervolt.hu: a fairy tale world for families

The Egyszervolt.hu group and within that the Mese.tv site does not only offer an alternative with its 24-hour availability, but also with its content. As opposed to the animations made on an assembly line as mass production for international audiences, Mese.tv selects and produces its films with a view to the nourishing of children’s culture. Stories, songs and poems are adapted to the needs of children, and serve to develop their visual skills as well.

The popularity of the szülőkhöz site group is characterized by the fact that it is visited by more than 250 thousand individual visitors, who spend an average of 42 minutes at the site. Mese.tv offers a family program: half of the children view the site in the company of at least one parent sitting by.

Simultaneously with the uploading of the MTV classics, a new era has started, in technological terms also, in the life of Mese.tv. The films are presented in a larger size than earlier, with higher quality images and sound; selection from the (at present) 300 films, and continuously growing, has also been made easier. The cartoons, puppet shows, fairy tales, clips and concerts are organized in series, start on the mouse click; navigation is also facilitated by a free-word search. The most viewed films that are judged best by the audience are organized in a separate category on the site.
